Hydration generates an enormous number of questions, many of which circulate as myths or half-truths across social media and wellness content. Getting accurate, evidence-based answers matters because both under-hydration and over-hydration have real health consequences, and making decisions based on misinformation wastes money and effort. Does Coffee or Tea Count Toward Daily Water Intake?

Yes—this is one of the most persistent hydration myths. Coffee and tea were long believed to cause net dehydration due to caffeine's mild diuretic effect. Research consistently shows this is not the case at typical consumption levels. A 2014 review published in PLOS ONE found that coffee consumption produced equivalent hydration to water consumption in regular coffee drinkers. The diuretic effect of caffeine is real but mild—the fluid in a cup of coffee more than compensates for the increased urinary output it may cause. Energy drinks, alcohol, and very high caffeine doses behave differently; these can cause net fluid losses. But ordinary tea and coffee—without excessive added sugar—contribute positively to your daily hydration balance.

Is Alkaline Water Worth the Premium?

Alkaline water (pH 8–9.5) is marketed with claims about neutralizing acid, improving metabolism, and superior hydration. The scientific evidence for these claims is almost entirely absent. The human body tightly regulates blood pH in a narrow range (7.35–7.45) regardless of what you drink; the hydrochloric acid in your stomach neutralizes alkaline water almost immediately upon drinking. Some limited research suggests potential benefits for acid reflux and for very specific athletic recovery scenarios, but the claims made in mainstream alkaline water marketing far exceed the evidence. For most people, well-filtered tap water at standard pH delivers identical hydration value at dramatically lower cost. If you enjoy the taste of alkaline water, that's a valid personal preference—but don't pay for health benefits it doesn't deliver.

Do You Need Electrolyte Drinks, or Is Water Enough?

For the vast majority of daily activities, plain water is sufficient for hydration. Electrolyte replacement becomes genuinely necessary in specific circumstances: sustained aerobic exercise lasting more than 60–90 minutes (especially in heat), profuse sweating from physical labor in hot conditions, illness involving vomiting or diarrhea, and extreme heat exposure. In these situations, replacing sodium, potassium, and magnesium alongside fluid prevents hyponatremia (dangerously low blood sodium that can result from drinking large amounts of plain water without electrolyte replacement). For everyday hydration—office work, moderate activity, normal daily life—electrolyte drinks are unnecessary and their added sugars and cost are genuine downsides. Electrolytes from a normal diet (sodium, potassium, magnesium from food) are sufficient for most people's non-athletic hydration needs.

Can You Drink Too Much Water?

Yes, though it is uncommon in healthy adults under normal circumstances. Overhydration (hyponatremia) occurs when water intake dilutes blood sodium below safe levels, causing nausea, headache, confusion, and in severe cases, seizures or death. This primarily affects endurance athletes who drink large amounts of plain water during prolonged events (marathons, triathlons), certain psychiatric patients with compulsive water-drinking behaviors, and people taking medications that affect fluid balance. For healthy, normally active people, drinking water to thirst and maintaining pale-yellow urine color eliminates any practical risk of overhydration. Deliberately drinking far more than thirst demands—beyond what any credible recommendation suggests—is the only way most healthy people would approach the threshold of concern.
