Sparkling Water vs Still Water: Which Is Better for You?
The explosion in sparkling water popularity over the past decade — from LaCroix to Topo Chico to a dozen premium imported varieties — has brought with it persistent questions about whether carbonated water is as hydrating as still water, whether the carbonic acid damages teeth, and whether it is genuinely the same as drinking plain water. The evidence on these questions is largely reassuring, with a few important nuances worth understanding.
Hydration: Equally Effective
The research is clear: carbonated water hydrates as effectively as still water. The carbonic acid formed when carbon dioxide dissolves in water (H2CO3) is present in very small quantities and is immediately dissipated in the digestive system. Studies comparing hydration markers in subjects who consumed equal volumes of sparkling versus still water find no meaningful difference in hydration outcomes. If you find carbonated water more enjoyable and therefore drink more of it, it is actively better for your hydration than still water you drink reluctantly.
The exception — and it is an important one — is intense exercise. Some research suggests that carbonated beverages may cause gastrointestinal discomfort during vigorous exercise, making them a poor choice for rehydrating during a long run or high-intensity training session. For everyday hydration, however, sparkling water is an entirely valid and equivalent alternative to still water.
Dental Health: The Nuance
The question of whether sparkling water damages teeth is more nuanced. Plain carbonated water (still water with carbon dioxide added) is mildly acidic — pH approximately 3-4, compared to still water's near-neutral pH of 6-7. This is far less acidic than sodas (pH 2.5-3.5), juice, or coffee, and the brief, limited exposure to this mild acid during normal drinking does not appear to cause significant enamel erosion in studies that have examined the question directly.
The risk increases substantially with flavored sparkling waters that include citric acid as an additive — citric acid is far more erosive to enamel than carbonic acid alone. Reading labels is important: "natural flavors" without added citric acid presents minimal risk; explicitly citric acid-flavored sparkling waters warrant more caution if consumed in very large quantities throughout the day.
Digestive Effects
Carbonation has a modest positive effect on some digestive complaints. Several small studies have found that sparkling water reduces symptoms of indigestion and constipation compared to still water, potentially because the carbonation stimulates digestive motility. Carbonated Water and Bone Health
One persistent concern about carbonated water is that it may leach calcium from bones, leading to reduced bone density. This concern originated from studies of cola drinks, which contain phosphoric acid that genuinely does affect calcium balance. However, research specifically examining carbonated water (without phosphoric acid or other additives) has not found significant effects on bone density. A large observational study found no association between carbonated water consumption and lower bone density, while another confirmed that only cola drinks — not other carbonated beverages — were associated with reduced bone mineral density in women.
The takeaway is that plain carbonated water, even consumed in substantial quantities, does not appear to pose meaningful risks to bone health. The concerns about carbonation and bones are largely a case of guilt by association with phosphoric acid-containing sodas.
